Intra Uterine Insemination (IUI)

During an intrauterine insemination (IUI) procedure, sperm is placed directly into the uterus using a small catheter. The goal of this treatment is to improve the chances of fertilization by increasing the number of healthy sperm placing close to  the fallopian tubes in the uterine cavity immediately after ovulation.

Indications for IUI :

  •  Low sperm count or quality or decreased sperm motility
  • Couples with unexplained infertility.

IUI is a widely used treatment option in fertility  because it is a :

  • minimally invasive, lower-cost alternative to in vitro fertilization (IVF). It can be conveniently performed in our clinic.

What to Expect in IUI?

  • IUI treatment is performed during an ovulation cycle.
  • Stimulation for ovulation.
  • Follicular growth by regular ultrasounds .
  • Ovulation monitored by serial scan.
  • Best time for insemination procedure being immediately after ovulation. semen sample of the partner is processed by a special technique called a sperm wash in the laboratory to obtain the best quality sperm. IUI treatment will take place in the clinic.

During the procedure, doctor will first insert a speculum to view your cervix (opening to the uterus), Then, we will insert a small tube — specially designed for IUI — to place the final semen sample into your uterus. The process takes only a few minutes and is generally painless.  You can return to your normal daily activities, after the procedure.

Two weeks following IUI, you will take a pregnancy test to see if the procedure was successful. If you are pregnant, we will monitor your pregnancy closely via blood test  and ultrasound. If your test is negative, we will prepare for a new treatment cycle or consider other treatment options.

Normally 3 to 4 cycles of IUI is recommended, before considering next higher level of treatment options for the couple.
